We want to share an update on the future of the Alma Powell Branch Library following our recent Community Committee meeting on April 14.
Since opening the temporary Alma Powell location in December 2024, Kalamazoo Public Library, along with our Board, staff, and Northside community members, has been working together to identify a permanent home for the branch. This work has been guided by the community and a site selection process designed to reflect the needs of the neighborhood.
In November 2025, using a site selection matrix developed with community input, the committee, Board, and KPL staff narrowed a list of locations to a few that fit the library's needs.
Since that time:
Some locations on the list are no longer viable options
We are currently in conversations with the Northside Association for Community Development (NACD) to explore possibilities on their property, which is one of the locations on our list of selected locations
At the same time, our contracted realtors continue to identify and review additional locations that meet the criteria established by the committee
As shared in our April 14 meeting, this approach allows us to move forward with promising opportunities while continuing to ensure we find the best long-term location for the Northside community.
Our Commitment to Communication We know how important it is to keep the community informed throughout this process.
Moving forward:
The Alma Powell Community Committee will continue to meet monthly
When there are significant developments, we will also create additional opportunities for community conversation and input.
Looking ahead:
This process takes time, but our focus remains the same: finding the right long-term home for the Alma Powell Branch that reflects the needs, voices, and future of the Northside community.
We appreciate your continued support, questions, and engagement as we move forward together.
