We want to share this month’s update on the work underway to find a permanent home for the Alma Powell Branch Library.
Over the past several months, KPL has continued to explore potential locations within the Northside community. We are now moving forward with assessments on two properties under consideration: the Cobb Street property and the Nelson property near Paterson Street.
Where We Are Now KPL now has an access agreement in place for the Cobb Street property, which allows firms to begin evaluating the site and existing building. Several firms have expressed interest in the project, and the first site walkthrough has taken place.
For the Nelson property near Paterson Street, KPL is working to finalize a purchase option agreement. Once that agreement is in place, site testing and assessment can begin. This work will help KPL better understand the property and what would be needed to prepare the site for a future Alma Powell Branch Library.
Once assessments of both properties are completed, KPL will have a clearer picture of the opportunities and challenges associated with each location, including the work and potential costs involved in preparing each site.
What Happens Next Environmental and site assessments will continue over the coming weeks. We hope to have initial results to review this fall. This information will help the Powell Building Committee and KPL Board better understand and compare the two properties as we continue toward identifying the best location for the permanent Alma Powell Branch.
The Powell Building Committee is scheduled to meet again in September. We know there is a great deal of interest in what comes next for Alma Powell. We appreciate the community’s continued patience, questions, and involvement as we work toward a permanent home for the branch.
